Architecture Is Here to Serve Us: The Navhaus Manifesto
In an age of digital excess, we return to first principles. Form follows function. Speed is a feature. Clarity converts. This is our manifesto for building the web that serves humanity, not the other way around.
Architecture is there to serve us, not the other way around.
In that moment of renovation chaos, my sister (who designs buildings that will outlast us both) cut through my anxiety with surgical precision. Her words crystallized a philosophy that would reshape how I think about digital spaces.
Architecture serves us. Not the other way around.
This isn't just about buildings anymore. In our hyperconnected world, websites have become the most intimate architecture we inhabit. We live inside digital spaces for hours each day, navigating interfaces that either empower us or exhaust us, that either solve our problems or create new ones.
The web has lost its way. We've built digital monuments to our own cleverness while forgetting the humans who must actually use them. It's time to remember what we're really here to do.
The Crisis of Digital Excess
Walk through the modern web and you'll find a wasteland of good intentions gone wrong. Websites that take longer to load than it takes to brew coffee. Interfaces so cluttered they require a PhD in visual archaeology to decode. Animations so aggressive they trigger motion sickness. Forms so complex they feel like tax returns and bureaucracy in government buildings.
We've confused complexity with sophistication, motion with emotion, and features with value. The result is a digital landscape that serves designers' portfolios and developers' egos while leaving users frustrated, confused, and ultimately gone.
The average website now weighs 2.7 MB. For context, that's larger than the original Doom game (2.39 MB). We're asking people to download an entire video game just to read about your restaurant's hours. And it's getting worse: according to the HTTP Archive Web Almanac, from October 2023 to October 2024, desktop page weight grew by 8.6% and mobile by 6.4%.
The average user abandons a site if it takes more than 3 seconds to load. Yet the average site takes 8.6 seconds on mobile. We've built a web that actively repels the people it's meant to serve.
This is a travesty of what a website should be. We're imposing our aesthetic preferences and technical indulgences on people who simply want to accomplish a task and move on with their lives.
Form Follows Function: The Eternal Truth
Form follows function. That has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union.
In 1896, architect Louis Sullivan coined the phrase that would define modern design: "Form follows function." The Bauhaus movement took this further, stripping away ornamental excess to reveal the essential beauty of purpose driven design.
A century later, we've forgotten this wisdom. We design websites like baroque cathedrals when we should be building Swiss train stations: efficient, elegant, and utterly focused on getting people where they need to go.
Every element must justify its existence. Not through beauty alone, but through utility. A button that doesn't clearly communicate its purpose is visual noise. A navigation menu that requires a treasure map to decode is an accessibility failure. A hero section that takes 30 seconds to convey its message is a conversion killer.
The Hierarchy of Digital Needs
Just as Maslow's hierarchy places physiological needs before self-actualization, digital experiences have their own hierarchy:
- Functional: Does it work?
- Reliable: Does it work consistently?
- Usable: Can people figure out how to use it?
- Pleasurable: Does it feel good to use?
Most websites skip straight to #4, building delightful interactions on foundations of sand. A website that doesn't satisfy the first three criteria is a cruel joke.
Speed as a Feature, Not an Afterthought
Performance is a user experience concern. It's an accessibility concern. It's a business concern.
Every 100ms of delay costs Amazon $1 billion in sales annually. Google found that increasing search results time by just 400ms reduced daily searches by 8 million.
Facts like these are the new reality of digital commerce.
Speed is about respect. When we build slow websites, we're telling users their time doesn't matter. We're saying our creative vision is more important than their productivity, their data plan, their patience.
The Performance Budget Revolution
We approach every project with a performance budget: hard limits that cannot be crossed. Here's an example of what that might look like:
- First Contentful Paint: < 1.2 seconds
- Largest Contentful Paint: < 2.5 seconds
- Total page weight: < 1 MB
- JavaScript bundle: < 200 KB
We approach projects with hard limits on performance metrics. Every image, every font, every line of code must justify its impact on these metrics.
The Psychology of Simplicity
Simplicity is about removing friction. It's the difference between a Swiss Army knife and a scalpel. Both are tools, but only one is designed for precision.
Hick's Law tells us that decision time increases logarithmically with the number of options. Present someone with 20 navigation items, and they'll spend more time deciding where to click than actually consuming your content.
Miller's Rule reminds us that humans can only hold 7±2 items in working memory. Design a form with 15 fields, and you've guaranteed cognitive overload.
The Paradox of Choice shows us that too many options lead to decision paralysis. Offer 50 product variants, and customers will leave without buying anything.
These are the reality of web design and psychology. Ignore it at the peril of your users.
The Conversion Power of Constraint
Minimalism is a revenue strategy. When we remove visual clutter, we remove cognitive friction. When we eliminate unnecessary choices, we accelerate decision making. When we focus attention on what matters most, we drive action.
Case study: A major e-commerce client came to us with a 2.3% conversion rate and a homepage featuring 47 different clickable elements. Fail any test, and the animation gets cut. No exceptions.

We prototype in real content, not Lorem Ipsum. We design with actual user data, not placeholder text. We test with real users, not internal stakeholders.
This approach reveals uncomfortable truths. That elegant card layout breaks when headlines are longer than expected. That beautiful grid collapses when product descriptions vary in length. That stunning hero section becomes illegible when the client's actual tagline is 40% longer than your placeholder.
Better to discover these realities in design than after launch.
Technology as a Tool, Not a Master
The JavaScript ecosystem produces a new framework every 3.7 days. Now, that's a completely made up statistic, but the fact that you had to do a double take, because of how believable it sounds, is absurd. The temptation to chase the latest shiny object is overwhelming. The cost of that chase is devastating.
Stability serves users. Novelty serves egos.
We choose technologies based on three criteria:
- Proven reliability: Has it been battle tested in production?
- Performance characteristics: Does it help or hurt our speed goals?
- Team expertise: Can we build with it confidently?

The Stack That Serves
We build with WordPress first, keeping it as clean and performant as possible. WordPress handles the vast majority of what most websites need when implemented thoughtfully. When specific requirements demand it, we selectively add other technologies: Next.js for complex applications, TypeScript for large codebases, Tailwind CSS for design systems. Yeah, this isn't the newest or the trendiest approach, we know. However, it's the most reliable for building fast, maintainable websites that serve users first.
When something demonstrably better emerges, we'll evaluate it. Until then, we focus on mastery over novelty.
Accessibility as a Moral Imperative
Accessibility is a human right, and one that should be very basic these days. When we build websites that exclude people with disabilities, we're failing basic human decency.
15% of the global population lives with some form of disability. That's over 1 billion people. Building inaccessible websites means deliberately excluding a population larger than Europe.
Accessibility benefits everyone. Captions help people in noisy environments. High contrast helps people in bright sunlight. Clear navigation helps people under stress. Good accessibility is good design, period.
Beyond Compliance
We don't build to WCAG standards because the law requires it (though it often does). We build to these standards because they represent the minimum viable respect for human dignity in digital spaces.
Every color choice considers contrast ratios. Every interaction supports keyboard navigation. Every image includes meaningful alt text. Every form provides clear error messages. This IS NOT extra work, it's THE WORK.
The Business Case for Humanity
Fast websites rank higher in search results. Google's algorithm explicitly rewards speed, and users reward fast sites with longer sessions and higher engagement.
Accessible websites reach larger audiences. The disability market represents $13 trillion in annual disposable income globally. Excluding these users is expensive.
Simple websites convert better. Every unnecessary element is a potential distraction from your primary goal. Every extra second of load time is a percentage point of lost conversions.
Reliable websites build trust. In an age of digital skepticism, a website that works consistently and predictably becomes a competitive advantage.
The business case for user centered design isn't theoretical or moral or whatever, it's just math. Also, it's just plain being normal. Don't be a dick.
Building Digital Habitats
Websites aren't billboards or brochures or visit cards or whatever your resident smartass wants to downplay them as these days, they're habitats. Places where people spend time, accomplish goals, and form relationships with brands. The quality of these digital spaces directly impacts the quality of human experience.
A good digital habitat feels invisible. Users accomplish their goals without thinking about the interface. Navigation feels intuitive. Content loads instantly. Forms submit without friction. The technology disappears, leaving only the value.
A bad digital habitat demands constant attention. Users fight with the interface instead of focusing on their goals. Every interaction requires conscious effort. Every page load tests patience. The technology becomes the experience, and the experience becomes frustrating. Even writing this made me break a tiny sweat out of frustration of thinking about it.
The Habitat Test
We evaluate every design decision through the lens of habitability:
- Would I want to spend time here?
- Does this help or hinder the user's primary goal?
- If this were a physical space, would it feel welcoming?
If the answer to any question is no, we redesign.
The Manifesto in Practice
Every Navhaus project follows these principles:
Discovery Phase
- User research first. We understand the audience before we design for them.
- Content strategy. We plan for real content, not placeholder dreams.

The web doesn't have to be slow, cluttered, and frustrating. Things are the way they are, mostly, because of the choices we make. And we can make different choices.
Imagine a web where every site loads instantly. Where every interface feels intuitive. Where every interaction serves a purpose. Where technology amplifies human capability instead of hindering it.
This is achievable with today's tools and techniques. It just requires the discipline to prioritize users over egos, function over form, and service over spectacle.
The Ripple Effect
Every fast, accessible, user-centered site makes slow, cluttered, confusing sites feel more obviously broken. Super simple.
The Choice Before Us
Every design decision is a choice between serving users and serving ourselves. Between solving problems and creating them. Between building habitats and building monuments.
The choice seems obvious, but it's not always easy. Serving users requires discipline. It means saying no to client requests that would harm usability. It means choosing boring solutions over exciting ones. It means measuring success by user outcomes, not design awards.
But this is the work that matters. This is how we build a web worthy of the humans who inhabit it.
Architecture is here to serve us, not the other way around.
In digital spaces, we are the architects. Our users are the inhabitants. Our responsibility is clear: build spaces that serve, support, and empower the people inside them.
Everything else is just decoration.
